What is a Registered Social Worker (RSW)?

The term Registered Social Worker is a protected designation.

In BC, Social Workers are covered by the Social Workers Act (2008) and Registered Social Workers are regulated by the BC College of Social Workers.

In Ontario, Social Workers are covered by the Social Work and Social Service Work Act (1998) and regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW). Additionally in Ontario, the term Psychotherapist is protected under the Psychotherapy Act and all Psychotherapy must be conducted by a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Mental Health Professional.

The qualification process to become an RSW is rigorous. In addition to completing degree studies at an accredited school of Social Work, we must also complete hundreds of hours of frontline work with clients under the supervision of a qualified Social Worker.

RSWs must pass a registration exam and complete annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to stay up to date with our practice. We are bound by a Code of Ethics that guides our practice and are accountable to the College should an issue arise.

Where do you practice?

I am registered with both the BC College of Social Workers and the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and offer my services via telehealth (online) only in both provinces.

At this time I offer ADHD Coaching only in Ontario.

Why work with a RSW for ADHD support?

Although many professions offer meaningful ADHD support, each profession has a different theoretical framework and approach. It is important to do independent research around this prior to getting into a working relationship with a professional.

Social Work is a unique and historical profession rooted in social justice and supported by evidence-based research. We seek to build capacity within people while acknowledging that we are deeply impacted by the wider environment around us. We aim to effect change at individual (micro), community (mezzo), and society (macro) levels.

I firmly believe that you are the expert in your life. Using evidence-based information on ADHD as the foundation of our work, I work in partnership with you to co-create strategies to make life easier while acknowledging your intersectionality and lived experience.

Aren’t you the same as a Life Coach / Psychotherapist / Counsellor?

Currently there are many professions offering support for ADHD and it is possible that there is some overlap in approaches between various professions.

However, not all professions have the same practice standards. It is always a good practice to choose a regulated professional where possible. Regulation protects you, the client, from unscrupulous or unqualified practitioners.

Are your services covered by insurance?

Services offered by a Registered Social Worker (RSW) may be covered by your (private) extended health benefits provider.

Insurance providers that have approved my services in the past include Public Service Health Care Plan (PSHCP), Sunlife, Greenshield and Canada Life among others.

However, as every insurance plan is different please reach out directly to your insurance provider to confirm coverage before booking an appointment if this is important to you. In all cases, the client is expected to pay at the time of the session. An invoice will be issued and can be used to submit directly to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

Will coverage provide by my insurance be enough to cover all of my treatment?

The coverage amounts set out by insurance companies do not necessarily correlate with the true cost of quality care.

Most people who use their extended health benefits for therapy also pay-out-pocket for additional sessions to keep the therapeutic process going until it comes to a more realistic end.
